
Sharing the success – Vuleka 2017
Rian Olivier has been named winner of the Vuleka Arts Competition of the Bellville Arts Association for his sculpture Missing Link.
It was the 54th time that the competition was held. There were 178 entries of 87 artists this year and 42 works were selected for the exhibition. The prize winners were announced in the Art.B gallery on Wednesday night. Since 1963, the competition has attracted artists who became famous. Among them are William Kentridge, who was the winner in 1980, Sue Williamson, Christo Coetzee, Pippa Skotnes and Andries Gouws. The artist Conrad Theys sponsored the competition for many years. The judges were Willie Bester, Theo Kleynhans and Ellene Louw.
The second prize was won by Hugo van Schalkwyk for his sculpture Toshiba Laptop this year.
The third prize was awarded to Janette Wright for her mixed media work Listen.
The exhibition is open until 9 September.
