art classes in May
I will be running a two part watercolour class in May.
We will cover all the traditional watercolour basics and some of my special techniques that I have explored over the years. If necessary, I will plan a third session to conclude all there is to learn, which is never possible!
SESSION 1:
SATURDAY 17 MAY, 9.30am to 1pm
Cost: R160 per person, materials excluded.
(I will research prices and give you an estimate as soon as I have it)
1. techniques:
Flat wash, graded wash, glazed wash, wet-in-wet, dry brush, lifting wet watercolour, lifting dry watercolour, splattering and textures, spray textures, back-wash textures, salt texture and more.
2. painting a landscape:
You will be supplied with a landscape photo which you will copy on to special watercolour paper. You will test and experiment with your newly aquired technical skills and return home with a lovely little landscape painting!
SESSION 2:
SATURDAY 24 MAY, 9.30am to 1pm
Cost: R160 per person, materials excluded.
(I will research prices and give you an estimate as soon as I have it)
1. drawing a still-life with pencil:
We will spend the first hour drawing a still-life which I will set up in the studio. By carefully observing the shapes, lines, textures and light and dark areas you will render a good likeness of what you are seeing.
2. painting a still-life:
You will copy the same still-life that you have just drawn on to your watercolour paper and proceed filling in colour and value with the techniques learnt in the previous session.
This time you will return home with a lovely little still-life painting in watercolour to impress friends and family!

Fourth art workshop
In the latest art workshop we did something new and something old. Charcoal drawing always goes down well, and the ladies and gents made some fantastic drawings. Another excersise was a pen and ink design inspired by arum lillies. The results are nice and colourful.
Join us next time and let me know if you want to receive email updates on when the classes are.
You will find my email address at the bottom of this page.

Gouache and watercolour paint on paper.

Finished gouache illustrations
These are three small watercolour and gouache on paper illustrations. I am making quite a bit of original artwork at the moment, still deciding what merchandise they will be applied to. Perhaps t-thirts, shopping or book bags?
Cornelius (the goat-bird) and Jack (a bunny-bear) evolved from random scribble drawings I made in December 2012. Spot the dog is just a silly dog I drew when I thought of my own dogs, Tonto, Rosie and Pepsi.
I would like to develop short stories around the adventures of my growing colony of creatures.

my studio today
Just a quick shot of “work in progress” on my wall. It inspires me when I surround myself with beautiful and colourful things. When I look at stuff that I am working on, I wait for the drawing or painting to “talk back” to me, then I usually know what the next step is! Or not!
I am “playing” quite a bit, believe it or not, it is quite a process to switch the analytical Right Brain off and to get into the free, associative way of thinking and creating of the Left Brain!
